Samba Fogo's Annual Samba Queen contest is inspired by Rio's world famous Carnival tradition. The Queen of Carnival is chosen through a contest based on her dance ability, energy, stage presence, expression, ornate costume, beauty and style, but above all she must have the "Carnival Spirit".
This annual event serves as an opportunity for community members as well as Samba Fogo company members to celebrate and honor the deeply-rooted tradition of Carnival - a tradition where imagination comes to life, fantasies become realities, and everyday people transform into royalty.
Dancers entertain the crowd as they compete for the title of 2018 Rainha Do Samba (Queen Of Samba) adorned in traditional Brazilian Carnival costumes of bright colors, feathers, sparkling bikinis and sky-high heels.
Each contestant gets a chance to perform a two-minute solo with a live Brazilian drum line, and local celebrity judges and audience voting determine the winner!
“As each dancer came out I was overwhelmed with anticipation and anxiety, one brave soul after another engaging with the crowd, connecting with the live drum beat in their own unique way. It’s truly one of kind – especially around here. The event captures the spirit of Carnival so well. – James Beach, 2017 Attendee
